Companies House define sensitive words and phrases as those whose use in a company name may imply business pre-eminence, a particular status or a specific function. The object of these restrictions is to make sure that the public is not misled by the company name. Often if there is a good reason for wanting to use a sensitive word it is possible to get approval.

Words which require justification include British, England, English, Scotland, Scottish, Wales, Welsh, Ireland, Irish, European, Great Britain, United Kingdom, International and National. There is no need to justify the use of the initials U.K. and G.B.

Other words which imply pre-eminence include association, federation, society, authority, board, council, institute and institution.

Words which imply specific objects include assurance, assurer, insurance, insurer, re-assurance, re-assurer, re-insurance, re- insurer, benevolent, foundation, fund, charter, chartered, charity, chemist, chemistry, co-operative, Friendly Society, group, holdings, patent, post office, Chamber of Commerce Trade or Industry.
